In total, six dead trees will be removed. Two trees will be replaced, one at the fence line behind the Visitor Information Centre and one in the centre of the cemetery (not in the same place, but in an available space in the same general area). The remaining four trees will not be replaced at this time after an inspection showed that the healthiest thing for the existing trees is to allow them to thrive with the reduced competition for resources – we look forward to watching them get big and strong.
The Town has been discussing trees as part of our natural assets for several years and while we continue our research and discussion about what it looks like to respect this natural asset, it is a fact that part of living with trees as an integrated part of our urban environment is the need to maintain trees; that means trimming, thinning, re-planting, and even removing trees when necessary. We ask that residents remember that multiple experts have been consulted about the need for these trees to be removed, and that this is a work site that is dangerous for the tree removal crews – these dead trees are dangerous which means that their removal will be dangerous. Please stay clear of the worksite for everyone’s safety. What do you do when you see something that worries you as a threat to life and/or property in Mahone Bay?
If it is an emergency, call 911 If it is not an emergency, call 902-634-8674. The non-emergency number is routed to the provincial dispatch 24 hours a day, if it is outside of business hours or even if someone in the local detachment can't pick up. If you aren't getting an answer right away, let it ring because that just means that the dispatch office is busy. RCMP are never far away and we consistently hear that people don't want to call because they don't want to "bother" the RCMP - you're not. Call if you have concerns. On Tuesday, June 22nd the Town of Mahone Bay hosted a community discussion about what project(s) would help create a better community for cycling in Mahone Bay.
