Electric Utility

The Town of Mahone Bay supplies electricity to approximately 725 customers located within the Town, as well as 26 customers residing near the Town limit in Maders Cove.

The Town is part owner of the Alternative Resource Energy Authority (AREA) which has operated the Ellershouse Windfarm since December 2015. The Town also purchases electricity from Nova Scotia Power Inc., and distributes it to its customers from the electrical substation located on Pond Street.

For more information on the Ellershouse Windfarm please watch this video.

The Town’s Electrical Department is staffed by two Powerline Technicians. After regular work day hours, and on weekends, staff are available on a call-in basis to handle emergencies only.

Property owners through their Electrical Contractor are required to make application to the Town for a Wiring Permit and Inspection. This applies to most electrical work including new construction, renovations, changes and upgrades for residential, commercial and industrial structures.

To report a Street Light not working, please contact the Town Hall during regular business hours.
