Wastewater Collection and Treatment
The Town’s wastewater system generally consists of the following; a gravity collection system, three wastewater pumping stations & associated forcemains, and an aerated lagoon wastewater treatment plant.
The existing collection system consists of approximately 5.5 km of gravity sewer pipes and 1.1 km of sewage forcemain. The system varies in age and materials, with the majority of the pipe installed in the late 1940’s. The wastewater pumping stations and treatment plant facility were constructed and made operational in 1994. Treated effluent from the plant is discharged into Mahone Bay Harbour near the Maders Cove Town limit.
The Town is responsible for the maintenance and repair of that portion of a sewer lateral which is located on Town property; this is the portion located between the sewer main and the private property line. The property owner is responsible for the maintenance and repair of that portion of the sewer lateral located between the private property line and the building.
In the event of a sewer back-up or blockage, first call a plumber to assess and repair the problem, and also, to determine where the blockage is located. If it is determined that the blockage had occurred on Town property please contact the Town Hall at 624-8327. In the event there is a break, collapse or failing connection located on Town property, it is the responsibility of the Town to repair. If it is determined that the blockage was a result of the type of material released into the pipe by the property owner (eg. grease, clothing, etc.), it is the responsibility of the property owner for any costs to repair.
New Sewer Connections
The Town installs all new sewer laterals between the sewer main and private property line. The property owner is responsible for all costs associated with having the sewer lateral installed from the sewer main to the building. For more details see the below:
